What is Thermal Auricular Therapy?

Thermal Auricular Therapy, also known as 'Hopi Ear Candles' is an extremely relaxing, comforting, and beneficial treatment. There is no need for the client to undress as the therapy can take place fully clothed, however shoes should be removed for comfort.

The client lies on their side on a therapeutic couch or equivalent in order that the first ear is uppermost and easily accessible to the therapist and the lighted ear candle is placed with its base in the client's ear. Once the candle has burnt for 10 to 15 minutes, the client is asked to turn over and the process is repeated on the other ear.

A light suction action (chimney effect) and the movement of the flame create a vibration of air in the ear candle, generating a massage-like effect on the eardrum.

This induces a pleasant feeling of warmth and a balance of pressure in the ears, forehead and sinuses. It can be soothing and helpful for earache and headache, ear noise, stress and nervousness. The physical effect is often described directly after the treatment as a soothing, pressure and pain relieving sensation, mainly in the ear and head area. Treatment may also spontaneously cause freer nasal breathing and an improved sense of smell, even when the nose was blocked before treatment. Furthermore, the whole ceremony brings a wonderful relaxation, a deep sense of security and a feeling of happiness, which is seldom experienced. A gentle nasal massage is done whilst the candle burns.

A light head and facial massage completes the therapy and afterwards, the contents of the candles are examined to see how effective the treatment has been and to indicate how further treatments should proceed.

The only Candles I use are Biosun Ear candles, which are still made by hand today using the traditional recipe, and the finest regularly tested ingredients. They are certified medical products according to EC guidelines 93/42 (EEC), regularly tested by independent institutes. Only pure beeswax, honey extract and traditional herbs such as Sage, St. John's Wort, Chamomile and pure essential oils are used.

A Brief History of Hopi Ear Candles

Ear candles are an ancient and natural therapy handed down by many civilisations and were used as far back as the ancient Egyptians, Chinese, Sumerians, and the Tibetan Monks, however it was the Hopi Indians of North and South America who popularised the technique.
It is believed that the Ancient Greeks used ear candles, initially probably for cleansing, purifying and healing on a spiritual basis, but much later on a purely physical basis. However, the practice reached the modern world via the native North American Hopi Indians.

Ear candles were used traditionally by Shamen healers. Ancient wall paintings (such as those found within the caves of the Grand Canyon) show the importance of ear candling in initiation rituals and healing ceremonies of the tribe.

The Hopi Indians are a tribe of about ten thousand people who live in northeast Arizona, where they settled long before the Navajo, the Apache, the Spanish or the Europeans who now call themselves Americans. Their culture can be traced back two thousand years, making it one of the oldest known in America.

The meaning of the word Hopi is 'peaceful people' or 'people of peace'.

For many centuries the Hopi Indians lived in harmony with nature and the original universal laws passed down to them by the Great Creator. Their responsible treatment of Mother Earth, their cultural standards, spirituality and vast knowledge of healing, still set these people apart.

It is from the Native American Hopi Indians of North Arizona that their practice of ear candle treatment, their knowledge of healing and their deep spirituality reached us in Europe.

Ear Candling and the associated face and neck massage may help the following conditions:-

Snoring - The candles help with drainage of the nasal passages, therefore the necessity of needing to open the mouth to take in air resulting in snoring should reduce
Excessive or compacted ear wax - The wax will be warmed by the candles and may be loosened for ejection within 48 hours
Colds and Influenza - The candles help to clear the airways and also raise the level of the immune system, which helps to fight infections.
Headaches and migraine - The candles and the massage can help the blood circulation and this may reduce pressure on the nerves within the outer skull. The massage can reduce stress and neck tension which are two of the causes of headaches and migraines.
'Swimmer's' or 'Surfer's Ear' - The astringent action of the candle's ingredients can reduce the flow of secretions. The herbal vapours can also sooth the outer ear canal and dry any infected water lodged in the ear canal.
Pain or Pressure when Flying or Diving - The candles warmth may be able to help the Eustachian Tube (Whose main purpose is to equalise pressure in the ear) open and close properly and reduce pain or discomfort when airline cabin pressure is changed, especially on landing or if ascent is being made during deep sea diving.
Noises in the Ear and Tinnitus - The warmth of the candle may improve the blood circulation in the whole ear, the best result on tinnitus may be to reduce the noise for a short time. The massage may reduce stress and this is one of the causes of tinnitus.
Sinusitis and Hay Fever - The warming action of the candles when combined with massage should help change pressure and drain the facial sinuses and nose.
Glue Ear- The warmth from the candle should encourage the muscular action of the Eustachian Tube to work better. The herbal ingredients of the candle should also help to strengthen the immune system.

You don't have to have something wrong with your ears to have this therapy. Hopi Ear Candling is a calming, relaxing and comforting treatment anyway and the treatment can help to relax the client and ease stress, leading to a positive state of mind. You could even combine a Hopi Ear Candle Treatment with any massage treatment.
